Discover the lunar landscapes and ancient nomadic trails of Jbel Saghro. This 5-day trek is a perfect balance of moderate hiking and deep cultural immersion. Starting from Marrakech, we take you across the High Atlas to the gateway of the southern mountains. You will hike through the territory of the Ait Atta tribe, witness dramatic rock formations like the twin towers of Bab n’ Ali, and sleep under the star-filled Saharan sky. This is one of the most unique trekking tours in Morocco, offering a raw and untouched perspective of the south.

Our Marrakech private tour guide will pick you up for a scenic drive through the High Atlas Mountains. After crossing the Tichka Pass, we descend into the palm-filled Draa Valley. We stop for lunch in a historic Kasbah before arriving at Nkob, the village of 45 Kasbahs.

Overnight: Traditional Guesthouse in Nkob

The trek begins! We head into the heart of the Saghro massif. The landscape shifts into dramatic volcanic towers. Our destination is the iconic Bab n’ Ali—two massive rock pillars that guard the valley.

  • Overnight: Camp at the foot of the towers.

We continue our journey through deep gorges and small Berber hamlets. Today offers plenty of opportunities to meet nomadic families tending to their goats. We cross a mountain pass that reveals the vastness of the southern desert plains.

  • Overnight: Camp near the village of Ighazzoun.

A day of stunning contrasts as we walk through oases and rocky plateaus. We descend toward the village of Handor, surrounded by lush gardens and ancient stone houses. This is a great day for photography and interacting with local farmers.

  • Overnight: Camp or Guesthouse in Handor.

After a final Berber breakfast, we walk back to Nkob where our vehicle is waiting. We begin our return journey to Marrakech, crossing the Draa Valley and the Atlas one last time. Arrive in Marrakech by late evening

This trek is considered moderate. It is suitable for regular hikers and active families. We walk between 5 to 6 hours a day at a steady pace. The best part? Our mules carry all the heavy luggage and camping gear, so you only need to carry a light daypack with your water and camera.

Unlike the High Atlas (which can be blocked by snow), Jbel Saghro is best visited from October to May. It is the perfect winter trekking destination because the weather is sunny and cool, while the rest of Morocco’s mountains are often too cold or snowy.

Most nights are spent in professional trekking camps with high-quality tents and mattresses provided by us. However, on the first and sometimes the last night, we stay in traditional Berber guesthouses (Gîtes) in villages like Nkob or Handor to give you a mix of adventure and local comfort.

You will be amazed! Our professional trekking cook accompanies the group and prepares fresh, hot Moroccan meals every day. Expect hearty Tagines, fresh salads, couscous, and plenty of Moroccan mint tea to keep your energy up. We also cater to Vegetarian and Vegan diets.

While in the mountains, you are "off-grid." We provide safe, treated water for drinking. Electricity is available at the guesthouses on the first and last days, but during the camping nights, we recommend bringing a portable power bank for your phone and camera.

Yes, we highly recommend broken-in, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support. The terrain in Jbel Saghro is volcanic and rocky, so sturdy footwear is essential for a comfortable experience.
